Petrol prices are the regulated pump prices. Diesel and paraffin prices are wholesale, so pump prices vary by garage. Official prices are set by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

Petrol is expected to go up by about R2.80 a litre, based on mid-month data. Official prices are announced a few days before the change.

How fuel prices are set
Fuel prices change on the first Wednesday of every month. The petrol price at the pump is regulated, so every garage in a zone charges the same. Diesel and paraffin are regulated at wholesale level, so pump prices can differ between garages. Inland areas pay more because fuel has to be transported from the coast.
